GPS navigation services provider TeleNav has completed the acquisition of goby, a Boston-based local search engine and mobile application developer.
goby is focused on offering users an easy way to explore and discover events and activities based on location. Currently, goby only covers things to do in the US. It has over six million things to do in the US.
Most of the 11 goby employees will join the TeleNav team and will remain in their current Boston location. It has been stated that additional details on timing and extent of goby content and technology integration will be announced at a later date.
goby focuses on two main goals. The first one is to help in solving frustrations involved in planning free-time activities. With Goby you do one search, specifying what you want to do, where and when to find what you need about a desired trip or leisure activity. And the second one is to offer a superior search experience. The results are organised in a way that’s easy to understand and use, rather than serving up page after page of websites that just happen to contain key words.
The company was launched in 2009. In October last year, goby closed a $2.5 million extension of its Series A funding from investors including Flybridge Capital Partners and Kepha Partners. With this extension of funding, goby took its total raised amount to $7.5 million.
